Rheumatologist · Sydney · Since 2003
I'm Dr Irwin Lim — rheumatologist, and Co-Founder and Medical Director of BJC Health. I've spent two decades building an integrated model of rheumatology care, and making the case that Australia needs more of it.
About
I've been a rheumatologist in Sydney since 2003. The thing that has driven most of my career isn't just the clinical work — it's the conviction that rheumatology care in Australia could be organised far better than it usually is.
Most people with rheumatic disease need more than a specialist consultation. They need physiotherapy, exercise, education, and support — delivered by people who talk to each other. That almost never happens in fragmented private practice. So we built a place where it does.
Away from the consulting room, I teach and mentor — GPs, allied health professionals, and the next generation of rheumatologists. Australia's rheumatology workforce shortage is real and worsening, and I'd rather help fix it than just describe it.
BJC Health
BJC Health is Australia's only genuinely integrated rheumatology group — 18 rheumatologists working alongside allied health, exercise, and education services across three Sydney clinics.
The point of all this is simple: clinicians who actually talk to each other, working around the same patient rather than in isolation. Our vision is for BJC Health to be Australia's rheumatology centre of excellence by 2030.
Education & Training
Australia doesn't train enough rheumatologists, and GPs get very little rheumatology education. I'm trying to help change both.
Annual event · Convenor
BJC JAM is an education event I conceived and convene each year. It brings GPs, allied health professionals, and rheumatology trainees into one room for a day of practical, case-based learning.
It's deliberately not a conference. Real cases, honest discussion, and the cross-disciplinary conversation that rheumatology education mostly lacks.
BJC has pioneered a private practice advanced training model, and I'm personally involved in supervision and mentorship. The breadth of clinical material and the integrated model make it a genuinely different place to learn — and our trainees have chosen to stay and build their careers here.
Workshops, webinars, and conference sessions for general practitioners — always practical. When to refer, what to do while waiting, how to manage common rheumatic conditions confidently. Early diagnosis changes outcomes, and GPs are where early diagnosis happens.
For Rheumatologists
Here's the honest pitch. Private rheumatology in Australia usually means practising solo or in a small group — building and running everything yourself, often without colleagues down the corridor and rarely with an allied health team around your patients.
BJC is the alternative we built. The infrastructure already exists: rooms, staff, systems, referral networks, integrated allied health. You bring the clinical skills; the practice supports the rest. And you're surrounded by rheumatologist colleagues who take the work as seriously as you do.
Whether you're established and tired of running everything, early-career and deciding what kind of rheumatologist to be, or a trainee starting to look ahead — I'd genuinely like to talk.
We're not trying to be the biggest. We're trying to be the place where rheumatology is practised best — and that depends entirely on who practises here.
